Farnley Reservoir:
Located two to three miles from Leeds City Centre, this reservoir is
a small wildlife haven in a built up area. It attracts many species
of exciting and unusual birds, and other species as well. At the
time of writing this there is at least one pair of resident Gadwall,
Canada Geese, Black-headed Gulls, Mute swans, Coots, Moorhen and
Mallards. There a lot of birds to see especially in the winter
months, when over wintering water fowl comes into the UK.
Ring-necked Parakeet have been seen here, as well as Mandarin Ducks,
Ebird will give you a good idea as to what birds have been seen
around the Reservoir.
Although called a reservoir,
it's not a reservoir, but in fact an overspill pool for Farnley
Beck, a small stream that would otherwise flood some of the Wortley
area, Sometimes called balancing pools, the reservoir was built in
1973, and is about eight hectares in surface area, in a mile in
circumference. This pool has a water capacity of 300,000 cubic
metres. Many a commercial company, and some residents have been
saved from flooding by the construction of this dam. However with
some of the down pours we get since global warming, means the dam
isn't always effective as it was.
