Black-footed Penguin:
Habitat:
This flightless bird is also known as the African Penguin, Cape Penguin
and South African Penguin. It is only found in South Africa. These
penguins feed on various creature that they forage from the sea.
Breeding:
This is the only penguin to breed in Africa, and nests in large colonies
on the Penguin Islands off south western coast of Africa. Nesting takes
place in guano burrows, or in the sand under boulders and bushes. Nests
are merely a scrape in the ground, females lay two large, ovular white
eggs. Incubation happens after about forty days, and parents stay for
about three weeks to care for them. After which they return to the sea
to feed, and return periodically to feed the chicks. Many young die by
exposure, or are picked off by predators.
Comment:
This bird is only found on the south western coast of Africa, on a group
of twenty four islands. These islands are situated between Namibia and
Algoa Bay, near to Port Elizabeth.
