UK Status: Resident.

Wing Span: 36mm to 41mm.

Flight Period: July and August.

Habitat: Woodland and hedgerows with ample Blackthorn.

Comment: A Highly local resident in England, Wales and Ireland. It was more common, but is now restricted to colonies in the south and south west, and a few colonies in the midlands, Lincolnshire and in the west of Ireland.

UK Status: Resident.

Wing Span: 28mm to 40mmm.

Flight Period: May and June, again in July and August.

Habitat: Sheltered sunny places where the food plants grow.

Comment: Common, and wide spread in the UK. Males and females are sexually dimorphic, the female is larger, and her fore wing has less acute angles.

UK Status: Resident.

Wing Span: 36mm to 41mm.

Flight Period: July to September.

Habitat: Open parts of woods and hedgerows where Blackthorn grows.

Comment: Local in England, Wales and Ireland, it was more common. In England just a few colonies in the south, and south west, the midlands, Lincolnshire and west Ireland.

UK Status: Resident.

Wing Span: 27mm to 34mm.

Flight Period: April to June.

Habitat: Heaths, moors and open woods,  with the food plants.

Comment: Common, and wide spread in the British Isles. It can be quite localised in the more northerly parts of the British mainland, due to the habitat requirements of the species.

UK Status: Resident.

Wing Span: 33mm to 40mm.

Flight Period: July and August.

Habitat: Oak woodland.

Comment: A high tree dweller, and is not often seen near the ground. Male and females are sexually dimorphic. The female having reduced purple patches fore wing, the male being purple over most of the upper side.
