Common Dog Violet:

UK Status: Resident and native to the UK.

Dimensions: Flowers can be from 10cm, and up to 50cm tall.

Flowering Period: From March through to late May, or early June, depending upon annual seasonal conditions. It is a perrenial plant, which also grows quite easily from seed.

Habitat: This beautiful plant grows in shady places such as woodland edges and rides, railway embankments and hedgerows. This plant doesn't like acidic, or very wet soil types.

Comment: Fairly common food plant for the larvae of several species of fritillary butterflies.
