Grey Heron:

UK Status: Resident.

Habitat: This magnificent bird is a sight to behold, whether wading in the shallows, or doing a low flyover, it beats the Red Arrows hands down. An unmistakeable bird, being so tall with it's long slender neck. They are found around the edges of bodies of water such as, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, estuaries, marshes with scaups and pools, any where with shallow water. Herons feed by wading in the shallows, catching fish, frogs, toads, newts, voles and mice, and even the occasional duckling. They have at times come into peoples gardens and taken goldfish.

Breeding: This bird nests in the tops of tall trees, nest are haphazard looking and made of twigs and small branches. Heron's lay three to four large pale blue green eggs.

Comment: To be found throughout the British Isles, and is reasonably common around some bodies of water.
