Azara's Agouti:

UK Status: Non resident, but can be seen in zoo's and wildlife parks.

Habitat: This rodent is found in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, it has gone extinct in some localities, due to over hunting. The size of the population is not known, and is listed in Argentina as vulnerable. In the wild they flee when humans are in their locality. Also known as jungle gardeners, because they often forget where there buried stashes of nuts and seeds are, thereby helping to get new plants started. These creatures live in tree hollows, and underground tunnels similar to rabbit warrens.

Breeding: No data available.

Comment: This is a very shy large rodent, because of its shyness and solitary life style it is difficult to study in the wild in any detail. Not a great deal about their habits and habitat are known. This species is named after the Spanish naturalist Felix de Azara
