Laughing Falcon:
UK Status: Non resident, but can be seen at
Wild Life Centres and Zoo's.
Habitat:
This bird prefers more open woodland and shuns dense dark forests. It
often inhabits both lowland coniferous and deciduous forest, but can be
found in palm groves and savannah.
Breeding:
Breeding is usually in the dry season which varies from country to
country. In some places it may be as early as January, but in other
places can be quite a lot later in the year. It has been reported as
breeding in September in Venezuela, in their rainy season. Nests can be
up to a hundred feet off the ground, and are built in tree crevices, or
where several stout boughs join the main tree trunk, rock crevices or in
another birds old nest. These falcons usually lay only one largish egg,
but on odd occasions there can be two.
Comment:
This bird is found from Mexico and throughout South America, with the
exception of Uruguay and Chile. Male and females look alike and are not
sexually dimorphic. Laughing Falcons are not generally migratory, and
are all year around residents in their given range.
