Red Deer: UK Status: Resident. Distribution: This species is found mainly in Scotland, but a few are found around the Lake District in north England, In south England there are small herds on Exmoor, in the New Forest, also the Thetford Forest in Norfolk and Suffolk. There are a few domestic herds on private estates scattered throughout England and Wales. Body Length: Stags are about 1.75 metres to 2.5 metres in length, and the stags are about 2 metres tall. Females are about 1.8 metres in length and about 1.8 metres tall. Habitat: This is a creature of woods and forests, and likes to graze in open meadows, and large forest clearings. Food Source: Small shrubs such as heather, grasses, rushes and sedges. Similar Species: Its long head and snout, and buff patch down the rump clearly identify this species. |
