Southern Bracket: Warning: This fungi is parasitic, and is inedible. Habitat: This fungi is is found in both coniferous and deciduous woods, more often than not found on beech trees. At times it can be found on other tree species, in the New Forest it has been recorded on alder, Birch, Oak and Pine. The surface of this bract is hard and knobbly, and ranges from off white trough ruddy brows to blackish. The lower parts are yellowish through grey to off white. Comment: Common and widespread in southern and eastern Britain, less common further north. It is also recorded from Wales and Ireland, and is to be seen all the year around. Growing up to approximately sixty centimetres across, and about thirty centimetres thick, it is hard to miss seeing it. |
