Our adventures in Florida continued ....

Nymphalidae - Danianae Nymphalidae - Danianae Nymphalidae - Heliconius Nymphalidae - Heliconius

You may have noticed by now that I've had to do a little bit of cheating. All the butterflies that are featured in this page, and the last one, I have seen in Florida. Unfortunately I either got no image of some species, and very blurry pictures. So I went to Sheffield and Skegness with a better camera, and got some better images. Actually in these tropical houses with their warm humid environment, it's very easy to imagine that you are in Florida which has the same hot humidity. Did you know by the way that the tap water in Florida tastes like its come from a ditch. The local guides are happy to tell you this, and recommend that you drink bottled water, or soda's instead. Is it a sales pitch?, I tried it, Yuk They weren't kidding.

Disney's Animal Kingdom has a line of mature trees at the edge of the car park, lichens hundreds of years old just dangle from these trees.

Florida is a great holiday for anyone interested in fantastic rides and wildlife. Anyone from the age of about five years would most likely enjoy being there. Most of the theme parks are landscaped with various plants and tree's. There are also wilder areas, and butterflies, lizards and other wildlife is common in the parks. Even the car parks are a wildlife treasure trove, I found my first katydid in Epcot's car park.  I was more than a bit surprised on my first visit in 2004, to find some of the parks were so picturesque. Lots of large colourful butterflies to be seen, and many species.

Nymphalidae - Danianae Nymphalidae - Dryas Lycaenidae - Hemiargus Lycaenidae - I'll never forget the day while on the way back from Walmart on I-Drive, I turned into American Way by the crazy golf, and encountered several four foot alligators.
The Monarch - Danaus plexipus The Julia - Dryas julia Ceraunus Blue - Hemiargus ceraunus Gray Hairstreak - Strymon melinus

During one of our visits to Florida, we took a trip to Gatorland. This place is all about Alligators, and Crocodiles. This place has a very wild look and feel to it, and it was the one and only time that I saw a couple of Phaon Crescent. Another place we visited, on more than one occasion was the Florida Everglades. What a lovely wild place, we saw many Monarch butterflies, and a lot of other forms of wildlife. On one trip we saw a grounded swarm of very colourful looking large locust type bugs. If you head for the Everglades bye the way, take insect repellent spray, its full of mosquito's.

Nymphalidae - Danianae Nymphalidae - Phyciodes Lycaenidae - Echinargus Lycaenidae - Leptotes The Alligators were a show piece at the crazy golf centre and had escaped their pen, wandering onto the pavement and road.
The Monarch - Danaus plexipus Phaon Crescent - Phyciodes phaon Realkirt's Blue - Echinargus isola Cassius Blue - Leptotes cassius

I visited the Kennedy Space Centre on three of our four visits to Florida. My wife declined to come with me on the third visit. Instead Elaine went shopping for the whole day. This was the time when the Shuttle launch was cancelled, due to a fuelling problem. This was the only time that I saw the Delaware Skipper. Again like most other places that attract large crowds there, it was very well landscaped, and look very wildlife friendly. I saw a multitude of  wondrous and colourful looking insects. Anyway you are probably getting bored with my tales by now, so I will bid you farewell from Florida.
